In October, we will have a women’s pageant, followed the very next day by a film protest against women’s pageants. On the pro-side is the idea that women, particularly Asian American women, could use a vehicle for publicity and community. Many former pageant winners, including the first Miss Asian America Mona Lee Locke, have gone on to have amazing careers. The pro-side of pageants encourages Asian Americans to take control of their images.

On the anti-side, critics charge that pageants are a relic of the past and that they put too much focus on a woman’s looks. According to detractors, we need to move beyond pageantry, and we need to take steps that move us away from the image of what pageants used to be.  The anti-side of pageants strongly advocates in favor of tossing off the baggage created by earlier waves of pageantry.

Sunday, 10/11/09, 2 pm: Screening of Curtis Choy’s Making Up (3min) and Year of The Ox: The 1973 Chinatown Livestock Show (17min) at the Asian Family Center, 4424 NE Glisan. A discussion about pageants will follow.  Hear both sides of the issue, along with a debriefing of the Miss Asian Oregon pageant.  This is your opportunity to watch, absorb, and make your voice heard!

The Thymos Anthology group will be having its second writing workshop on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2 PM. It will be held at the Woodstock library in Portland. So save this date in your schedule if you’re interested in participating.

This second workshop will be similar to the first one held with Lawson Inada in that it’s designed to help people develop their submission ideas for the upcoming Thymos Asian American Anthology.

This workshop will be run by Profs. Patti Sakurai and Patti Duncan of Oregon State University. Bring your ideas, written drafts, or other work for this unique opportunity!

The Thymos Anthology writing workshop with Lawson Inada!

Oregon poet laureate Lawson Inada will lead a writing workshop for people interested in submitting work to the Thymos Asian American Anthology.

Bring your ideas, personal stories, or even written drafts to the workshop where Lawson will lead the class in participatory, hands-on activities designed to develop or refine people’s potential submissions.

So if you haven’t started your anthology submission yet, now would be a good time to start, so that you will have something to work with at the workshop.

In addition, Byron Wong will have sound recording equipment on hand for those people interested in recording oral histories (or even rap demos) after the workshop formally ends. These oral histories will be part of the Thymos anthology website.

Thymos Anthology Call for Submissions

What does it mean to be an Asian American in the twenty-first century?

From the mainstream perspective, tired stereotypes about Asian people as model minorities, asexual techno-geeks, hypersexual dragon ladies, or perpetual foreigners still persist–though often concealed behind politically correct slogans like colorblindness and diversity.

One racial obstacle that Asian Americans thus face is the inability to claim an identity and culture that are defined by the Asian American community itself, rather than how mainstream society defines us. Whether it’s dealing with popular stereotypes or the effects of racism, many such issues ultimately stem from a lack of power.

This includes the power to express our lives, histories, and beliefs in a manner that is true to our lived experiences. And in an era where the media has vast influence to shape the very nature of Asian America for both ourselves and others, this is more important than ever.

With this book project, we are taking responsibility for telling our own stories. The project is an anthology that will compile the experiences of Asian Americans. We want people to tell their stories in their own words; communicate perspectives that challenge or transcend mainstream stereotypes; or simply relate something uniquely personal as an Asian American.

These experiences may be profound. They may be prosaic. But they always remain true to their source and inspiration.

We invite you to submit your story for our book project. If your work is selected, we will publish it in our forthcoming anthology with Oregon Poet Laureate, Lawson Inada.

APA for Progress PAC Launches Glen S. Fukushima

Campaign Fellowship and Placement with

Judy Chu’s Campaign for Congress

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 19, 2009) – Asian Pacific Americans for Progress PAC (APAP PAC) today announced the launch of its Glen S. Fukushima Campaign Fellowship and the placement of the Fellow with Dr. Judy Chu’s campaign for California’s 32nd Congressional District, which will be vacant should current Congresswoman Hilda Solis resign to become the U.S. Secretary of Labor.

The campaign fellowship is made possible through a donation by Glen. S. Fukushima, a former Deputy Assistant United States Trade Representative for Japan and China at the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Executive Office of the President.

APAP PAC is currently accepting applications. Go to www.apaforprogress.org/apap-pac to learn more and apply. Applications are due on Feb. 28, 2009, at 11 p.m. Pacific Time.

Mr. Fukushima, a veteran of NCR Corp., AT&T Corp., and Cadence Design Systems, Inc., is a California native, a Fulbright Fellow, and a graduate of Stanford University, Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Business School, and Harvard Law School. He is currently CEO of Airbus Japan.

“With such a competitive race ahead of us, I’m so thankful for a Campaign Fellow from APA for Progress,” said Dr. Chu. “The Fellow will play an important role in my efforts to share my experience and vision with the voters of the 32rd Congressional District.”
