A HISTORICAL MUSIC EVENT IN CHINATOWN

ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25

Portland, Ore., September 10, 2010 – “Music Under the Autumn Moon”—a celebration for the 68th anniversary of Portland’s Cantonese opera club, Yat Sing Music Club—will take place on Saturday, September 25, 8-10:30pm, on Davis Festival Street, NW Davis between 3rd and 4th Avenues in Chinatown.

Friends of Portland Chinatown is proud to present an outdoor multicultural concert on Davis Festival Street featuring performances by Yat Sing Music Club, Portland Cello Project, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, Classical Revolution PDX, Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, Matt Sheehy, and en Taiko.

Yat Sing Music Club is a private music club that is normally not open to the public. “Music Under the Autumn Moon” presents a rare opportunity for Portlanders to see a live Cantonese opera performed by Yat Sing . It also provides unique cultural exchange opportunities between Yat Sing and artists from outside of the Chinese community performing at the event.

A pre-concert community potluck will take place at the Main Hall of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (317 NW Davis) from 6-8pm. Boxed dinners will be provided by restaurants in Chinatown (suggested donation: $7 per box). During the potluck hours, there will also be photo-taking opportunities with CCBA’s 100-foot-long Dragon on CCBA’s stage. Chinese imperial costumes provided by Portland Chinese Times (suggested donation: $10 per photo).

“Music Under the Autumn Moon” will take place around the Mid-Autumn Moon holiday, which is the second largest holiday for the Chinese. In the spirit of sharing food, music, and mooncakes, this community event celebrates both the Mid-Autumn Moon holiday and Yat Sing Music Club’s 68th anniversary.

About Yat Sing Music Club

Founded in 1942 in Portland Chinatown, Yat Sing has been performing at social events in the Chinese community, and they have been practicing weekly in a basement in Chinatown since 1942! The members of Yat Sing include Chinese Americans who are founding members of the club and newly arrived immigrants from China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam.

About Friends of Portland Chinatown (www.pdxchinatown.org)

After over a year of monthly brainstorming sessions on what it takes to revitalize Chinatown, in March 2010, Friends of Portland Chinatown was formally organized. FPC is a group of Asian Americans who share a similar vision and passion for revitalizing Portland Chinatown, with the mission of bringing pedestrian traffic and historical awareness to Chinatown through planning cultural events.

This event is sponsored by Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and funded by Regional Arts & Culture Council.

Thanks to all who made it out to our five year anniversary yesterday! I had a great time, and I hope everyone else did too.

In October, we will have a women’s pageant, followed the very next day by a film protest against women’s pageants. On the pro-side is the idea that women, particularly Asian American women, could use a vehicle for publicity and community. Many former pageant winners, including the first Miss Asian America Mona Lee Locke, have gone on to have amazing careers. The pro-side of pageants encourages Asian Americans to take control of their images.

On the anti-side, critics charge that pageants are a relic of the past and that they put too much focus on a woman’s looks. According to detractors, we need to move beyond pageantry, and we need to take steps that move us away from the image of what pageants used to be. The anti-side of pageants strongly advocates in favor of tossing off the baggage created by earlier waves of pageantry.

We encourage people to check out both events. Here is the info:

Saturday, 10/10/09, 12 noon: Miss Asian Oregon at Marco Polo Global in Salem. Click here for tickets and info. Come to see how Miss Asian Oregon is “Redefining Beauty in Asian America.” This is THE inaugural event, so buy your tickets now. Remember, you can’t say you were there if you weren’t.

Sunday, 10/11/09, 2 pm: Screening of Curtis Choy’s Making Up (3min) and Year of The Ox: The 1973 Chinatown Livestock Show (17min) at the Asian Family Center, 4424 NE Glisan. A discussion about pageants will follow. Hear both sides of the issue, along with a debriefing of the Miss Asian Oregon pageant. This is your opportunity to watch, absorb, and make your voice heard!

Please e-mail us with any questions!
