Thymos is an Asian American awareness and activism group based in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to promote intellectual and social self-determination for Asian Americans. Our membership consists of lawyers, business people, professionals, politicians, writers, and community leaders.
We are different from most activism groups in that our focus is on intellectual and social matters, rather than pure civil rights. We take an educated approach to problem solving, using history and knowledge as a means of promoting awareness and action. We are primarily a proactive, rather than a defensive, organization. Although many of our members are professional academics, many of our members are not, thereby enabling us to pool many kinds of talents into our awareness and activism.
For more information concerning how to join or how to get on our mailing list, please contact Byron.
We have chosen to use the image and words of human rights activist Yuri Kochiyama on our website in order to show our support and admiration for a trailblazer in the APIA community who continues to influence Asian American activists today. Yuri Kochiyama came to national recognition in the 1960s through her involvement with radical international liberation movements and her close association with Malcolm X. Although Ms. Kochiyama’s dedication to ending global oppression inspires our message, she is not affiliated with Thymos. (Photo from Hyphen Magazine.)
