“MUSIC UNDER THE AUTUMN MOON”—

A HISTORICAL MUSIC EVENT IN CHINATOWN

ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25

Portland, Ore., September 10, 2010 ­– “Music Under the Autumn Moon”a celebration for the 68th anniversary of Portland’s Cantonese opera club, Yat Sing Music Clubwill take place on Saturday, September 25, 8-10:30pm, on Davis Festival Street, NW Davis between 3rd and 4th Avenues in Chinatown.

Friends of Portland Chinatown is proud to present an outdoor multicultural concert on Davis Festival Street featuring performances by Yat Sing Music Club, Portland Cello Project, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, Classical Revolution PDX, Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, Matt Sheehy, and en Taiko.

Yat Sing Music Club is a private music club that is normally not open to the public.  “Music Under the Autumn Moon” presents a rare opportunity for Portlanders to see a live Cantonese opera performed by Yat Sing .  It also provides unique cultural exchange opportunities between Yat Sing and artists from outside of the Chinese community performing at the event.

A pre-concert community potluck will take place at the Main Hall of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (317 NW Davis) from 6-8pm.  Boxed dinners will be provided by restaurants in Chinatown (suggested donation: $7 per box).  During the potluck hours, there will also be photo-taking opportunities with CCBA’s 100-foot-long Dragon on CCBA’s stage.  Chinese imperial costumes provided by Portland Chinese Times (suggested donation: $10 per photo).

“Music Under the Autumn Moon” will take place around the Mid-Autumn Moon holiday, which is the second largest holiday for the Chinese.   In the spirit of sharing food, music, and mooncakes, this community event celebrates both the Mid-Autumn Moon holiday and Yat Sing Music Club’s 68th anniversary.

About Yat Sing Music Club

Founded in 1942 in Portland Chinatown, Yat Sing has been performing at social events in the Chinese community, and they have been practicing weekly in a basement in Chinatown since 1942!  The members of Yat Sing include Chinese Americans who are founding members of the club and newly arrived immigrants from China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam.
